有這樣一句話“Every other class agreed to my proposal.”，讀到這句話我們都知道“every other”起著十分重要的作用，這句話的意思到底是同意還是不同意？如果同意，有多少人同意？

    我們都知道“every other”表示“隔一個”，“every other line”和“every other day”分別是“隔行”與“隔天”的意思。如果依照這個意思，那原句就翻譯為“同學中每隔一個人同意我的建議。”意思指有一半人同意我的建議，但這句話要表達的并非這個意思。

    “Every other”除了上面的意思之外，還有“其余的”意思，例如“Every other girl in the class received a gift but me.”（除了我以外，班上所有其他女孩都收到了禮物。）“Jerry was late but every other boy arrived in time.”（杰瑞遲到了，但其他男孩都來得很及時。）因此，開頭的原句應該翻譯為“其余的同學都同意我建議。”

    在英語中，分別指兩個事物，我們用“one, the other”，“every other”則指“兩個中的一個”，即“隔一個”，所以“every three/four”是“每三/四個”的意思。例如“The postman came only every other four days.”（郵遞員要每四天才來一次。）然而，“every”還有“所有的”意思，有時也起到限定詞的強調作用，例如“He knows every single person in the school.”（他認識學校里的所有人。）“every now and then”中的“every”也是一種強調。
