這個短語來源于劇場。演員們在舞臺上表演時，就直接面對著樂池中的樂隊，在舞臺上，演員經常會由于緊張或怯場而造成忘詞等尷尬的局面，只要音樂一響，演員就沒有任何選擇的余地，只能去face the music（必須承受出現的局面）。人們遂用face the music指承擔自己行為的后果。
